Wednesday, May 9th, is Seattle Foundation’s GIVEBIG 2018. GIVEBIG Seattle is a one day online giving event to raise funds for nonprofit organizations serving the Greater Seattle area. In 2017, donors raised $19 million for local nonprofits – bringing the seven-year combined total to just under $100 million! The DSC would love your support during the GIVEBIG 2018 event, so we thought we’d answer a few of our Frequently Asked Questions to help you get to know our organization better!
What does ‘DSC’ stand for?
DSC stands for Down Syndrome Community of Puget Sound. Back in 1988, a small group of parents began meeting regularly to support each other in raising a child with Down syndrome, and hence, the Down Syndrome Community was born. We recently legally added ‘of Puget Sound’ to give a clearer understanding of the broad community we serve. Most people familiar with our organization now just know us as the DSC. What areas does the DSC serve?
The whole Puget Sound area! From Seattle to Tacoma and all the in-between. And if we can’t find the resources you need, we will try to get you in touch with an organization that can.
Who “runs” the DSC?
We are an organization run by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. We have one part-time paid staff member (Maura Dunn). Our 15 board members each serve a 3-year term, with elections held prior to the annual meeting each May.
What does the DSC do?
A lot! Our mission is: ‘To provide impactful programs and resources for individuals with Down syndrome and their families while evolving perceptions in the broader community.’ We provide programs, events, and resources specifically for individuals with Down syndrome and their families giving our community members an opportunity to learn, connect, and get inspired!
What are some of the programs and resources?
Some of our programs include: First Call Program (providing support and up-to-date information to families who receive a Ds diagnosis), DSC Friends social groups (age-based play groups/get togethers held monthly along with online connections), and The Learning Program (an early literacy program developed by the Down Syndrome Foundation of Orange County). This year we started a kindergarten readiness class called Ready, Set, Kindergarten. The DSC, in collaboration with Dr. Rebecca Partridge of the Down Syndrome Program at Virginia Mason, offers a four-session class called Understanding Adolescence and Puberty for teens and tweens and their parents.
The DSC also hosts many social events throughout the year, free of charge to all our community members, including the Sweetheart Dance, the Holiday Party and Megarama Day. Make sure to check the monthly newsletter and our online events page for our upcoming events.
Does the DSC put on the Puget Sound Buddy Walk?
Yes, we have been hosting the Puget Sound Buddy Walk at Seattle Center for the past 21 years. This year will be our 22nd year! Please join the Puget Sound Buddy Walk Facebook page for details and updates.
Is the DSC just for children?
Absolutely not! We support all people with Down syndrome, from diagnosis to adult. We provide resources for activities, schooling, and the workforce no matter the age, and welcome one and all to any of our community events!
When I donate to the DSC, what does my money go towards?
All of the events, programs and resources listed above. The Down Syndrome Community of Puget Sound is a nonprofit organization, meaning all funds raised goes to support our mission and is tax deductible.
