AAC Together:

A Parent Education and Child Play Group

Description:

This 15-week course is designed for caregivers who support individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), or for those who are interested in simply learning more about AAC. This course provides practical strategies, hands-on activities, and community support to building confidence and skill in supporting AAC use at home. Each 45-minute session focuses on a key topic to help you better understand your AAC user’s needs, how communication works across different settings, and how you can be a powerful communication partner. While parents receive education, children using AAC will be engaged in a structured play group. This course is designed for parents, family members, and caregivers of AAC users of all ages and communication levels as well as the individual using AAC. Any AAC modality is welcome in this group, including speech-generating devices, picture exchange cards, and sign language.

What parents/caregivers will learn:

  • What AAC is and how it supports engagement in the community

  • Strategies to encourage communication during daily routines

  • How to grow your AAC user’s vocabulary and independence

  • What to do when your AAC user isn’t using their system

  • How to collaborate with your child’s team and troubleshoot challenges

Age Group:

3-13 years for the play group, but parents/caregivers are welcome to participate in the parent education portion regardless of age of child!

Thursdays @ 5:30-6:15, at the DSC Campus
